New Lecturer Timeline for Spring Hiring Requests

September 5, 2019
Dear Chairs, Managers, and AP Analysts,
We are writing to provide you with the deadlines for your spring lecturer hiring requests.
October 18, 2019: Search reports are due to the Dean’s Office for all spring lecturer requests (if applicable)
November 1, 2019: Requests for appointments and reappointments for spring lecturers are due to the Dean’s Office
November 25, 2019: Deadline to enter spring hiring requests into the SHARE smartsheet for 1/1/20 appointments
January 14, 2020Deadline for Lecturers that need to complete onboarding
Please note that the Berkeley International Office is requiring requests for new J-1 visas or J-1 visa extensions by October 14th, 2019 for January 1, 2020 start dates.
If your department does not currently have an active lecturer pool, please establish one during the month of September for any unanticipated lecturer needs in spring.
Following Berkeley’s transition to UCPath in the spring, we recognized the need to adjust our processes in response to the increased amount of time required to complete the appointment and reappointment transactions by the UC Path Center in Riverside.  Three additional UC campuses will be going live in UCPath this fall, with two going live in December. These transitions will create delays and blackout periods with UCPath, and we have to factor in the holiday curtailment period as well.
We understand that it may not be possible to submit every request by the deadlines above, as late hires and changes are inevitable with lecturer hires. We encourage you to submit your requests by the deadlines to ensure that your lecturers do not experience any interruptions with benefits and pay, and to allow sufficient time to schedule and complete onboarding when necessary. Lecturers need to complete onboarding by the first day of the semester, January 14, 2020 to avoid teaching day basis calculations.
We thank you in advance for your efforts to complete your lecturer hiring process earlier as we work together to adjust to the transition to UCPath. As always, please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Max Auffhammer
